This instrument is recognised in America, in the UK it is sometimes called a "short scale Bouzouki" because of the scale length, fitting in nicely between the Octave Mandola and the Bouzouki. It is also the same length as the 10 string Cittern but with only 8 strings. It is ideal for players who can't quite get the stretch of the bouzouki.
